Meet Carl Allen, our employee spotlight of the month. Carl grew up as the son of a farmer and has always strived to follow in his father’s footsteps. Carl has been working for our Family since 1975. He originally worked as a truck broker back when Smith’s Truck Brokerage was around. He used to travel all over the country to load trucks. So, as you can imagine he has made many friends along the way.
During Carl’s days as a truck broker, Herschel Smith sent him to many of the larger potato shippers on Long Island, New York. And before GPS, Carl made many of the maps for the truck drivers to follow, which gave clear directions to all the warehouses that they shipped to. He has known Herschel Smith for most of his life and their families are very close. They still enjoy going to church together whenever they are able.
Carl retired about 7 years ago but since has come back to work for Smith’s Farm. Today he oversees all the schedules regarding trucks and their arrival times to our cooler. He loves what he does and up until 2012, when he had a minor operation, he had never missed a single day of work. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Rita. They love taking trips and cruises to the keys at least once a year. Carl says, “I am so thankful that the Lord has given me the good grace to work. As long as you’ve got the health you’ve got the wealth”.
